Librarian's Skillbook Skill#3: Digital Archiving

Hunt and Grossman (2013) state that digital archiving goes hand in hand with digitization and electronic indexing. It involves all the tasks centred around organising the digital archive. Many organisations are looking to save space by digitizing their records and this process also facilitates better access and preservation. Librarians already possess many of the skills necessary for archival work, with many smaller archives being a hybrid collection of books, papers and ephemera relating to a central theme. There are archival standards, such as Describing Archives: A Content Standard (DACS) and Encoded Archival Description (EAD) (I'm not sure if these are American or used internationally). They are basically a set of rules that can be used to describe and catalogue an archival item. Hunt and Grossman suggest that gaining some experience of archival and digital cataloguing will widen employment opportunities.

The Librarian's Skillbook Skill #2: Electronic Indexing

Following on from Skill#1: Digitizing, the next skill in the Librarian's Skillbook is knowing how to index and catalogue items that have been digitized. This will make these items more meaningful and accessible to users. In my own work I am actually using Heritage Cirqa (ISOxford) to catalogue items from the archives. I realise this is probably not the best tool to use but I use Heritage as a main library catalogue and I wanted users to be able to conduct a single search to find items of interest in both the library and the archives. I am finding it a challenge as cataloguing something like a handwritten letter is totally different from cataloguing a book. I am learning that it is important to keep collections together as they are donated then cross reference them using keywords and dates.

I would be very interested to hear from anyone else who is using Heritage within an archive.

The Librarian's Skillbook: Skill 1 - Digitization

Happy New Year everyone!

So as I wrote in a previous post, I'm going to try and work through The Librarian's Skillbook: 51 essential career skills for information professionals by Deborah Hunt and David Grossman (2013). It is an American book, but that might be good for me as I work at a study abroad college owned by an American University.

Skill 1: Digitization.

Hunt and Grossman urge us to try and get some experience with working on a digitization project - large or small. I have an ideal opportunity here, as I have just started cataloguing our archives which include a variety of documents - hand written letters, photographs, maps. A small number of these have already been scanned and are stored on an internal server, but I would like to look at ways to open up access to a wider audience. Creating a blog maybe? I am particularly impressed with this example from Abingdon School http://www.abingdon.org.uk/63objects/.

Is anyone else working on a similar project?

Visit to West Bridgford Library - Tuesday 28th January 2014

East Midlands Regional Member Network

Visit to West Bridgford Library

Tuesday 28th January 2014 2.00 – 4.00p.m.

Bridgford Road, West Bridgford, Nottingham NG2 6AT

At a time when most public library authorities (including Nottinghamshire) are suffering reductions in budgets, politicians saw fit to continue with the long awaited replacement of West Bridgford Library which opened in March 2013.

Come and visit this impressive building and hear what local staff have to say about it.

This a good opportunity to network with colleagues and pick up some new ideas.

Please note that that although there is plenty of parking next to the library it is only for 2 hours and has the keenest set of traffic wardens  imaginable.  The session will therefore run strictly to time. There is good public transport from the city centre and the station is about 20 minutes walk away. There is limited street parking in the vicinity.

Please inform Kath Owen kath_owen@yahoo.co.uk if you wish to join us. The visit is free and tea/coffee will be provided.
