The Librarian's Skillbook
I'm going to challenge myself to look at a skill per week in the new year, taken from Hunt, Deborah and Grossman, David (2013) The Librarian's Skillbook: 51 essential career skills for information professionals. Would anyone like to join me? Some of the skills look like things I do anyway but others will be introducing a new skill or a refresher for something I don't often do in my work. Let me know if anyone fancies taking on the challenge too and we can use this blog to chat about the skills each week.

Local library temporary closure
What with work and studying I haven't used my local library (Wigston, Leicestershire) much recently; now with more time over the summer break I've discovered it's closed for refurbishment! However I'm pleased that they're spending money and also very pleased that they've arranged to open the children's section nearby - as a child I'd have been lost without my almost daily trips to the library.
I've just finished 'The Appearance of truth' by Rosemary J Kind - good page-turner for the summer. Also enjoyed "Lovers take up less room: an alphabet guide to the Tube" by Rosemary - a funny, quirky book. I'll own up to the fact that her Mum is a friend of mine - but without this link I don't think I'd have come across these books.

Kimberlin Library (00.11), De Montfort University
I am really looking forward to our forthcoming event "Making the
textual visual”: Engaging visual learners with text" here at De Montfort University. This will be an exciting and different event which is based on research and connections made through a DMU Teacher fellow project run by Kaye Towlson (Academic Librarian (Learning and Teaching) and Julia Reeve (Faculty of Art, Design and Humanities), De Montfort University. This event will take place Thursday 4th July 2013, Kimberlin Library, De Montfort University offers Librarians, Learning Developers and academics from across the UK the chance to:
- Experience visual and kinaesthetic learning techniques
- Hear about the student response and experience of such techniques,
- Consider the theoretical underpinning to this type of learning,
- Engage with Critical thinking activities
- Explore visually enabled reflection
- Group work to put methods into practice
- A chance to network across disciplines, professions and institutions.
Speakers include Lisa Clughen Nottingham Trent University, Jenny Moon, Bournemouth University and Alke Groppel-Wegener, University of Staffordshire as well as Kaye Towlson and Julia Reeve. The event will look at and experience in ways of enabling students to cross the text barrier frequently faced by visual and tactile learners.
Queries contact Kaye Towlson (kbt@dmu.ac.uk).
